Courses

The Victorian School of Languages (VSL) leads the way in language teaching. With a dedicated focus on language education, the VSL boasts a high level of expertise and is well-positioned to offer innovative and high-quality language programs. We implement a unified curriculum rationale, methodological approach, and organisational focus for each language and year level, forming the foundation for developing individual syllabi and teaching materials.

Our curriculum provides students with a balanced range of learning experiences that are active, cooperative, and participatory, maximising their potential. Curriculum development follows a communicative approach to language teaching, fostering intellectual, social, emotional, and creative growth. It is inclusive of all genders, abilities, and backgrounds. Learning tasks and assessment practices are designed to be measurable, ensuring that students are both enabled and encouraged to excel. All courses are regularly reviewed to align with the Victorian Curriculum and VCE.

VSL courses are available for students who cannot study their chosen language at their regular school. Eligibility for enrolment in all VSL courses is determined by Department of Education guidelines.

Face-to-Face Classes

The VSL offers a diverse range of face-to-face classes across 40 VSL Centres throughout metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria. We provide courses in many languages from Foundation to VCE. Our courses are designed to match the standards and content of those offered in mainstream school language programs and follow a consistent course design.

Face-to-face classes are conducted outside regular school hours at VSL Centres, which are located within government secondary colleges. Most classes are held on Saturday mornings, with some available on weekday evenings.

Under specific arrangements, some adults may also be eligible to enrol.

Distance Education

The VSL offers a range of courses through Distance Education, allowing students to complete and submit coursework at their own pace. Students also receive regular oral lessons from specialist teachers based at the VSL. Distance Education is offered at the Secondary School level for students from Government, Catholic, and Independent schools.

Students may decide to study through VSL Distance Education for a variety of reasons:

  • The desired language is not available at their home school.
  • A timetable clash prevents them from studying the language at their home school.
  • They are not attending school, either due to travelling interstate or overseas, or due to ill-health or other difficulties.

Enrolments for school-based students must be processed through their home school.
