Who can enrol
The Victorian School of Languages is a designated purpose school of the Department of Education, providing language education for students who do not have access to the language they wish to study at their regular school.
Who can enrol at the VSL:
- All children, from Foundation (Prep) to Year 12 (VCE), that are eligible to attend a Victorian school across all education sectors (Government, Independent, Catholic) are welcome to attend our school.
- They may enrol if they are unable to study their language of choice at their home school.
- Students will be enrolled in the same year level as their home school.
- Students enrolling at our school as part of a Foundation (Prep) intake will be required to provide proof of age (indicating that they have turned 5 years of age by the 30th April of that year).
The VSL offers after-hours face to face classes as well as Distance Education programs. The enrolment process differs depending on which type of program you wish to study.
Enrolment for VSL face to face classes

All enrolment applications to attend VSL face-to-face classes must be submitted online via Compass. The VSL does not have paper application forms. Students cannot attend classes unless they are officially enrolled and on the class list.
Parents will need to complete the following online application steps.
- Go to the Language Finder to identify which language and centre is right for your child: https://web.vsl.vic.edu.au/language-finder/
- Once you have chosen your language and preferred centre, click on the Enrol Now button. This will take you to the relevant Compass portal.
- Register and set up a VSL Compass Parent account. Even if you already have a Compass account at a different school you must create a new one for the VSL.
- Set up the Student Profile for your child (you will need to provide family and medical information and proof of identity in this section).
- Create an enrolment application for your child with your desired language and corresponding VSL centre.
- Submit your enrolment application.
Note:
- Submitting your enrolment application is not a confirmed enrolment.
- VSL staff will process submitted applications
- You will receive an email to confirm that your application has been accepted and that your child is enrolled.
- Existing students must be re-enrolled each year. Parents will be notified via Compass when re-enrolments are open.
Placement tests for VSL centre classes:
- The VSL does not administer placement tests.
- Your child will need to be enrolled in the same level they are in their home school.
If the class you have selected is full, you will be given the option of being added to the waiting list or having your enrolment application withdrawn and refunded.
You can check the status of your enrolment application in your VSL Compass account at any time.
Enrolment for VSL distance education

Distance Education is currently offered at secondary school levels 7-12 (VCE).
School based students:
The enrolment application must be completed by the student’s home school.
Parents who are interested in the distance education option should discuss the enrolment with their child’s home school.
Existing home school supervisors can enrol students into distance education via the VSL DE enrolment hub. Home school supervisors can use the same credentials used for accessing the Student Progress page.
If the school does not have an existing account with the VSL, the prospective home school supervisor will be able to complete a registration form to create a new account (to be available in Term 4, 2026).
When you submit the enrolment application, the status will display as ‘Application Pending VSL Approval’. Enrolment is not confirmed at this stage. Confirmation of enrolment will be sent by the VSL once applications have been processed.
Placement tests for distance education:
For new enrolments (above year 7), the VSL may request that the student completes a placement test, to help determine the most appropriate level for the student.
Placement tests will only be administered during the enrolment period.
Home schools will receive a single invoice for the total sum of the fees applicable for enrolment. The invoice will list each student and the language(s) being studied. The VSL is unable to issue invoices for individual students or issue invoices to parents of school-based students.
Enrolment for students in approved home schooling
Parents of students in approved home schooling can enrol their child into VSL distance education. The student must have a contact address in Victoria, and the parent must be able to provide their VRQA home schooling registration letter.
Parents of registered home-schooled students will be able to complete a registration form to create a new account and request enrolment (to be available in Term 4, 2026).
Enrolment for international students (or Overseas Full Fee Paying) Students
International students attending a Victorian school can enrol in VSL subjects. The International Student Coordinator at the student’s home school will need to complete the enrolment process. International students (or their parents) cannot enrol directly via the VSL website.
/ Schools can enrol international students in Victorian government schools through the VISIT system.
International students in non-government schools should be enrolled via the form issued annually by the International Education Division of the Department of Education. Please ensure you use the form for the correct calendar year. The 2027 form should be available towards the end of the 2026 academic year, and will be available here.
