Face to Face Classes

The Victorian School of Languages (VSL) offers face to face classes for students from Foundation (Prep) to Year 12, around 50 languages, with 40 language courses available at VCE level.

The VSL’s face to face classes are available across 39 VSL centres in both metropolitan and regional locations. All VSL centres are located in Victorian government schools.

VSL face to face classes are held outside regular school hours. Most classes are scheduled on Saturday mornings, with some also available on weekday evenings.

The classes

The VSL’s face to face classes involve 3 hours of classroom instruction per weekly session. This is equivalent to the level of instruction delivered for other regular subjects in mainstream schools.

VSL language classes are held during school terms, with approximately 8 scheduled classes per term. At VCE level, there is a minimum of 50 hours of instruction per unit.

Our classes are capped at 26 students, and depending on the number of enrolments in that language, the class may be mixed level.

The learning

The VSL teaches the Victorian Curriculum 2.0 and the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE).

All of our primary school level classes are suitable for beginners, and our Year 7-10 courses are designed to provide a pathway to VCE language study. Students will be enrolled in the same year level they are in their home school.

VCE language studies are not suitable for those without prior learning of the language. The VCAA recommends that students undertaking Units 1 & 2 have completed 200 hours of prior classroom language learning.

Students have access to a range of learning resources while studying with the VSL, including specialised curriculum materials developed by the VSL.

All of the VSL instructors at VIT registered teachers. A range of teaching and delivery methods are employed to cater for our diverse student learning styles and needs. Teachers regularly undertake professional training and development as part of their employment with the VSL.

Assessment

For all year levels, student reports are issued twice a year and parents have the opportunity to attend parent-teacher interviews twice a year.

In VCE level classes, school-based assessments are conducted during VSL class time. year 12 written examinations are completed at the student’s home school, and oral examinations are organised by the VCAA.

Enrolment in VSL VCE language classes is recorded in VASS, to ensure the classes are counted towards the student’s VCE attainment and ATAR.

Domestic students

Eligibility for enrolment in VSL courses is determined by Department of Education guidelines. Victorian school students – from all sectors, government, catholic and independent – may be eligible to enrol in VSL face to face classes if:

• The subject or level is not offered at their home school.
• A timetable clash prevents the student from taking the subject at their home school.

It is the responsibility of parents to enrol their child in VSL face to face classes (not the child’s home school). All enrolment applications to attend VSL face to face classes must be submitted online via Compass. Students cannot attend classes unless they are officially enrolled and on the class list.

Through the enrolment application process, the VSL requests parents to pay a voluntary financial contribution to help maintain quality language instruction. The is $90 for students in F-10 and $110 for students in VCE.

International (Overseas Full Fee Paying) Students

International students attending a Victorian secondary school can enrol in VSL face to face classes.

All international students must be enrolled by their International Student Coordinator of their home school.
