VSL EAL Day at Bendigo

Recently, several staff from the English as an Additional Language (EAL) Virtual New Arrivals Program of the VSL met with students from the Bendigo region for a day of community based activities. We had over 40 students attending with their mainstream school teachers, from nine different schools in the area. As our teaching and learning program is completely online, this was a fantastic opportunity for us all to meet together in person, and enjoy a unique day together.

We started our day at the Bendigo Art Gallery, with an educator led tour and foam clay art making activity. The students made beautiful depictions of their favourite places and things.

A highlight of the day was the lunch activities. Thanks to the glorious sunny day, we enjoyed games of soccer, volleyball, and frisbee. There were also bubbles, board games, and chalk drawing. This was a great time for staff and students to interact and make new connections.

We finished the day at Bendigo Library, with a tour for senior students, and free exploration for the juniors. Some students were even able to sign up for library cards.

Thank you to all the Virtual New Arrivals Program staff for making it happen, the Bendigo teachers for their participation, and special thanks to our multicultural education assistants for their invaluable and irreplaceable work.
