Greek Independence Day March at the Shrine of Remembrance

On Sunday 22 March 2026, members of Melbourne’s Greek community gathered at the Shrine of Remembrance to commemorate Greek Independence Day. The event formed part of the annual celebrations marking Greece’s liberation in 1821.
The day began with a formal commemorative service held at the Shrine’s forecourt, a significant location that honours those who have served in wars. The ceremony recognised the long-standing friendship between Greece and Australia, as well as the shared sacrifices made during times of conflict.
Following the service, a march took place along Birdwood Avenue, featuring a wide range of participants. Dignitaries, including community leaders and officials, attended the event and took part in wreath-laying ceremonies to pay respect to those who fought for freedom.
Students played an important role in the march, proudly representing their schools and heritage. Many wore traditional Greek costumes or school uniforms, while others carried Greek and Australian flags. Their participation highlighted the importance of passing cultural traditions on to younger generations.
The procession also included cultural groups, veterans, and community organisations, creating a vibrant display of Greek-Australian pride. Marchers celebrated their history through music, flags, and coordinated group participation, reflecting the strong sense of identity within the community.
Greek Independence Day is officially celebrated on 25 March each year and is one of the most significant dates in Greek history. It commemorates the beginning of the War of Independence in 1821 and is marked worldwide by parades, ceremonies, and cultural events.
The Victorian School of Languages has participated in the march since 1997. Ms Irene Kodoudakis ensured that all preparations were made to ensure that this VSL excursion was safe and followed school excursion protocols. On Sunday, the VSL was represented by students and staff from Keilor Downs, Carwatha, Distance Education and South Oakleigh. Our VSL staff and parent group ensured that our students were comfortable and cool as it was a hot day in Melbourne. Present on the day were: Irene Kodoudakis, Maria Halim, Eleni Kolokithas, Mary Christofidis, Stevi Stavropoulou, Denis Katiforis, Venetia Kefalianos and Pamela Alexopoulos.
Overall, the event at the Shrine of Remembrance was both respectful and celebratory. It brought together dignitaries, students, and the wider community to honour the past while celebrating Greek culture in Australia today.
